4 Steps to Easy Beard Care

Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion Blog, Gentlemanly Grooming, Gentlemen, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Style Tips

Senores,

Kings wear a crown.

It’s the defining “garment” of their royalty.

If  you’re a father, son, brother, nephew, or uncle….

THEN YOU ARE A KING!

But please don’t walk around wearing a crown.

That’s weird….VERY wierd.

Like, no one wants to see you looking like the Burger King guy walking around town!

But there is a way to show your nobility.

There’s a calling card of sorts that announces that the king has arrived!

THE FACE CROWN!

Kalan Beard

Beards have always been a part of a man’s style. Historically, your manhood was linked to you beard. From a prehistoric context, beards were worn for warmth, intimidation, and protection.

In ancient Egyptian culture, Egyptian royalty used false beards that were made of metal. It was held in place by a ribbon that was tied over their heads. This was one of many signifiers that a man was a member of the royal family.

Listen, that literally  sounds like some king-ish to me!!!!!

But we’re beyond that now and it’s a growing (pun intended) personal style element that modern gentlemen are embracing more and more. The conservative gent and workplace haven’t quite caught on fully, but the beard is on an upward trend in popular culture…regardless of ethnicity.

In my humble opinion, beards are here to stay. And as a black man there are specific steps that I must take to care for my face crown so that is announces  my kingship with distinction.

In fact, beard care has it’s roots (another pun intended) in Mesopotamia. These civilizations would use beard oil to keep their crowns healthy and robust looking. It’s important to maintain a great face crown. It can communicate a couple of things to those onlookers:Mesopotamia

  • Appearance is important to you
  • You are committed to style
  • Pay attention to grooming details
  • Cleanliness is a priority
  • You are a take charge kind of guy

NOW….

How do you maintain your beard? It’s actually very simple. These steps work regardless of your hair texture and/or curl patterns.

I. WASH YOUR BEARD

This is the simplest step in the process! Every day, whether you’re in the shower or at the sink, wash your beard when you wash you face. You can use a specific beard wash or a shampoo.

My preference is a beard wash. Using standard shampoo can strip your hair of essential oils that your beard needs. They an also dry out your face. Beard oils are complete with many natural products like shea, jojoba oil, keratin, coconut oil and others.

I have a specific regimen that I will detail later in the post.

II. CONDITION YOUR BEARD

Again, you can use your a standard conditioner or a specific beard conditioner. The purpose of conditioner is to replenish some of the oils that may have been washed off during the shampooing process. Conditioners don’t have harsha alcohols that will strip the hair.

Let’s discuss the process of conditioning

  1. Use a nickle’s size of product
  2. Work into your damp beard after you’ve washed it
  3. Use comb or pick to make sure that the product completely touches the shaft
  4. Let sit for 1-2  minutes. (Use this time to brush your teeth or wash your body if you’re in the shower)
  5. Rinse thoroughly

III. REPLENISH YOU BEARD

This process will vary with depending on what types of products work best with your texture. The important thing is to apply the beard oil or beard pomade to the hair when damp.

Gents, do not put the product in your palm and rub it in. This will not guarantee that it will be applied to every strand of hair.  Instead, place in on your finger tips and apply the oil or pomade by pulling using your fingers.

Start at the base of the hair strand and gently pull away from your face. Doing this will ensure that the replenishing process works as best as possible and that the pomade will be distributed evenly.

Another option for applications is spray. But you still want to employ the finger tip method to make sure the product has an even spread.

IV. STYLE YOUR BEARD

Simply put, brush your beard if it’s not long enough to comb or comb/pick your beard out if it’s full. Styling does more than make your beard look nice and neat. It also helps to distribute the oils from the replenishing process. Thirdly, styling helps to train your beard to grow into a certain direction.

A “part B” to the styling is edging your beard up. I recommend using a straight razor because you get the cleanest line possible. This takes time and practice so exercise patience. Consult your barber for the best techniques.

BONUS

Below is my washing schedule:

  • Monday – Wash using beard wash, condition using beard conditioner, apply replenishing products
  • Tuesday – Wash using beard wash and  apply replenishing products
  • Wednesday – Wash using beard wash, condition using (leave in conditioner – does not need to be rinsed, instead let it soak into hair), apply replenishing products
  • Thursday – Wash using beard wash and apply replenishing products
  • Friday – Wash using co-wash (washing substitute that cleanses and conditions)  and apply replenishing products
  • Saturday – Wash using beard wash, condition using beard conditioner, apply replenishing products
  • Sunday – Wash using clarifying shampoo (Clarifying shampoo will completely strip off all of the oils and build up that have been on your hair throughout the week), condition using beard conditioner, apply replenishing products.

I have dry skin and hair so it’s important that I condition my hair a couple of times a week. Additionally, I’m in a warm environment (Houston, TX) and I sweat a lot so clarifying shampoo is absolutely necessary to remove all the sweat and build up from my busy week.

My preferred products are:

Shea Moisture with Maracuja Oil and Shea Butter

Beard WashThis products is great because it deep cleans my beard of dirt, flakes and odors without drying out facial hair and skin. The Maracuja Oil and conditioning Shea Butter combine in this pH balanced formula that provides a clean slate for flawless grooming.

Remember to use a dime to nickle size of this product and work it into the hair with a good lather. You want to be sure to clean the hair thoroughly

Pantene Truly Natural Co-Wash

CowashThis product helps to fuel hair with a blend nutrients and antioxidants to guard against damage while cleaning, conditioning, and detangling. Its oil enriched so it moisturizes without stripping the natural oils.

Rub a half-palm size of the cowash into my hand and apply directly to my wet beard. It’s important to work it in to the hair using your fingertips. You can use a comb to comb out the hair while the product is in. This is optional. What is a must, however, is letting it sit in your beard for about a minute.

Cantu Leave In Conditioner

Great for hydrating and mending dry or coarse hair. It’s a leave in conditioner which means you don’t rinse it out. This is infused with pure shea butter and other natural oils.

Cantue Leave In

Cantu Pomade

My secret weapon!!!!!! It’s not something that’s typical for beards but it works great for me. Even though it’s a pomade, the product is not heavy.Cantue Pomade It provides a dope shine that lasts all day and smells great. Hey, my wife approves!!!!

A Lesson from the Style Professor…

Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion, Fashion Blog, Gentlemen, Happy Hour, Inspiration, Lifestyle, Men's Fashion, Men's Shoes, Men's Style, Mens Style, Menswear, street style, Streetwear, Style Tips

Senores,

By day I am a maestro de la ciencias politicas (political science professor).

Shocking, I know. I’m more than just some fly dude, lol.

And I think that kind of reality fits us all. We are more that what meets the eye. Being pegged in una caja (a box)  is an injustice as it doesn’t fully allow us to showcase how uber talented we truly are.

As such, I’d like to challenge you to show off your real identity. You know, that person you were meant to be. Gente (people) deserve to know the essence of you.

We are all put on this mundo for a reason and to achieve a specific purpose. If we aren’t being who we were meant to be, then the world won’t get to experience the measure of greatness that was given to you.

Step 1: Be Okay with YOU!

Idris Elba asked a group of adults what they wanted to be when they grew up and the responses were amazing. Actually, some made me tear up. Many had forgotten their dreams. Life took over and, like all of us, they adjusted. Now, adjusting is great. The vida that we live can throw curve balls to us and we need to be pliable…BUT NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR DREAMS.

So, gaze into the world with intention and join me in showing the world who you really are!!!!!!

grey-headshot

Me?

I’m a dope college professor, with a dope political radio show,  who is a dope style maven that has a dope style blog (which I use for inspiration) and I try to change the world one dope; stylish, and learned person at a time! Oh, and a dope clothing line is soon to come!!!

To be more succinct, I’m Kalan Laws, The Style Professor. It’s nice to meet you!

Y usted es? (And you are…)

Now that we’ve met, let’s go to the next step.

Step 2: Cover and Show

Show the world your talentos. Give them….us a piece of your gift. UNAPOLOGETICALLY! For too long you’ve hidden behind the veil, stayed in a cave – cloaking your greatness in the shadows.

But when you show who you really are,  do so strategically. The masses may associate your face (metaphor for you) with one thing, so let your talent go before you. Produce your art, create your product, cement your brand…then reemerge as the new and autentico you!

Cubre (cover) your face (what folks know as the old you) and show your product (the new you). Caballeros (gentlemen) if you decide to literally cover your face, make sure you use some dope headgear.

img_3752

Jacket:Forver 21

Walk away from where and how you used to move and let the new you lead. Keep working toward building the foundation, walls, and roof of the you that people need to see.

Step 3: Take a Step Back

After some time, lay back and gauge the reaction to see if you are getting any bites. Sit still and watch as personas begin to marvel at such dopeness. The idea here is to let what you’re construiendo (building) work for you. Movement is great…necessary but there are times when sitting still is best.

img_3755

Boots:  Bar III (@bar3)

Step 4: Focus on the Details

As you, in all of your new dopeness, continue to enlighten all as to the real you – take a minute to focus on what makes this you different than the other you. Focus on the detallas that make the redefined you so special.

I guarantee that there is something you have or that you are doing that may be seemingly insignificant…maybe even considered a flaw or undesirable, pero is extremely poderoso (powerful). This characteristic is what your new audience NEEDS to experience. OWN IT. SHOW IT. BE IT! Give them a close up look so they can know that you are for real!

Step 5: Move with Confidence

Now that you’ve announced who you really are, walk proudly in your new truth! Pop your collar porque you have done what so many cannot or are afraid to do. Research is clear that confidence matters just as much as ability. People are drawn to the person whose moxie is fuerte (strong).

img_3756

Photos: @flawson_

And keep going. Keep pushing. Keep heading toward your finish line!! Once you’re done, stand on your proverbial podium…proud of what you’ve done and who you have become.

For now the world has seen the true you, and in pursuing your truth, you’ve realized purpose. Those who have experienced the transformation and/or finished product will have been impacted, inspired, and ignited.

Señores!
Today is la dia that we celebrate PADRES!!!

Dads get corbatas (neckties) or a camiseta (tshirt) that says “Best Dad”

Dads are taken out for dinner or to their favorite sporting event.

It’s daddy’s day so whatever he wants, he gets!

Well, what yo quiero is to share with you is three things that fatherhood has taught me about style!

1. I REPRESENT MORE THAN MYSELF

I’m elder of my family. I’m the figurehead that the world looks to to protect and provide for them. While more than important, provision goes beyond money and tangible things that have an associated value.

To my daughter (and future children), I provide an ejemplo of what a man should look like. When she gets ready to go on her 1st date (at 30 years old, lol), she’s going to choose someone that reflects me.

As well dressed man, we are though to have:

  • Power
  • Intelligence
  • Success
  • Cultured

These, among others, are qualities that I would want my daughter to look for in a man. Also, a well dressed man consistently:

  • Exhibits attention to detail
  • Exudes confidence
  • Exemplifies leadership

These are also the qualities that I want my niños and esposa to see in me.

My wife Kira and daughter Eden

As a fashionable black man, I am a walking billboard for black culture as well. The creativity that it takes to piece together such a dapper demonstration of dignity is admirable. It speaks to the innovation that resides in me ( and all other fashionable black fathers and men) in its totality.

Brandon and Olivia

Speaking of reflection, it will be seen in the mirror of the world. As such, the segundo thing style has taught me about fatherhood is…

2. I’M IN AN ELITE CLASS

I’m a dad and that means I’m in an exclusive fraternity!

I’m an African American dad and that means I’m a superhero!

Tshirt – @TheUrbanDads

In a tiempo when black dads are not as present in the family as in yester-year, I take huge pride in this responsibilidad and privilege.

  • My personal style helps to change the narrative in how the black male and the black father are perceived in media!
  • A well groomed and astonishingly put together black man all but eradicates the notion that all black men are ghetto thugs and hoodlums (which is how mainstream media and Hollywood often portray us).

All about business!

3. I AM FEARLESS

Tradición and cultura has boxed in style for men for years and it can be suffocating. It has been said that only certain colors are masculine. The old consensus was that being well manicured and paying atención to your appearance wasn’t manly. I scoff at that sentiment!

I jump at the chance to look nice!

Men of style and culture know that it can be a daunting task trying to live up to such standards that are, honestamente, not grounded in reality. Being a man of style has started to change the conversation about the perseption of masculinity.

Gents, be confident in this:

  • Dressing well doesn’t mean you’re soft and weak.
  • Smelling nice doesn’t mean that you’re not a man.
  • Polishing your shoes has no bearing on toughness.
  • Getting manicures and pedicures doesn’t make you any less of a man’s man.

Strength in style…

Style conscious gents have endured ridicule and castigation for daring to strive for excelencia in our appearance. We’ve been fearless in this pursuit regardless of the level of criticizing!

Hermanos, I applaud you for being courageous in this endeavor. You deserve a standing ovation for enduring the name calling, being cast away, and having your manhood challenged.

Call upon that gallantry in life when times get hard. Know that you can and will conquer difícil circumstances when they present themselves!

Bro, you’re a man…100%!

5 Reasons to Buy Bespoke

Fashion, GQ, Lifestyle, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Mens Style, Menswear, Style Tips, well dressed

¡Señores!

Me espero todo bien (I hope all is well).

Una pregunta…

Are you taller than 6’4″; or maybe you’re shorter than 5’5″. Whether you’re a gigante or a microgent, one thing you share is that it’s hard to find clothes with el correcto fit.

The same is true for mis grandes amigos y atleticos!! When you’re sizes are beyond the norm shopping can be difícil.

So what do you do when your measurements just aren’t found in the stores?

Photo |www.dangerouslee.biz

The obvious answer is get your clothes tailored, to which I wholeheartedly agree. Regardless of your size, your tailor should be as much a part of your wardrobe as your favorite pair of jeans!
Pero, let me offer another opción: Bespoke!

Bespoke is just a fancy word for custom and I want to give you 5 reasons you should treat yourself to bespoke clothing!

1. Stellar Experience

When you go bespoke you are met with customer service beyond belief. They wine and dine you.

I recently had my first bespoke experience with Knot Standard

and Sons of Savile

Boy was it amazing!!!

Imediamente both companies took an interest in me. They were getting a feel for who I was as we were about to embark on the journey of selecting fabric, getting every inch of me measured, and customizations.

Sons of Savile was particularly interesting because they are an exclusive digital community that caters to your bespoke needs. They have a dope concept that’s really worth checking out. You don’t have to leave su casa to get a dope custom camisa (shirt)! Simply send your measurements in and your shirt will be mailed out to you!

2. One Of A Kind Piece

Custom means just that…CUSTOM. You can design a tailor made piece that reflects your specific estilo. You don’t have to worry about having a piece that looks like any other garment out. The details are what matter. Every unc is hand picked by you! You chose the following:

  • Fabric
  • Thread
  • Buttons
  • Button holes
  • Types of pockets
  • Lining
  • Collars
  • Lapels
  • Waist bands
  • Pleats or flat front
  • Sleeve cuffs
  • Cuff or no cuff in pants
  • Number of buttons
  • Fun personalized details

Hashtag personalizations and impeccable stitching

3. Hand Stitched

The quality of hand stitched is unsurpassed. There’s a level of care for each detail and each specification that’s put into the garment’s construction. A tailor can see any imperfections or mistakes before the item is finished and correct them immediately.

4. Premium Fabric

Style is about fit and fabric! Cuando going to a bespoke tailor the offerings of fabric are endless. They are rich in

Most times the mills that produce the fabrics are European and have been in business for decades or longer. They know the tricks of the trade to produce el mejor (the best) fabric available.

El nuemero uno benefit of such quality fabrics is that it will last. You won’t have to worry about pilling.

All Suit | No Socks…

Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion, Fashion Blog, Gentlemen, GQ, Men's Fashion, Men's Shoes, Men's Style, Mens Style, Menswear

¡Señores!

It’s no secreto that a well made traje (suit) is the quintessential element of a gentleman’s  wardrobe. Quite frankly, it’s a must!  And, to not have one goes against the fabric of gentlemanly cultura.

The brand of suit isn’t as importante as the fit. Ahora, don’t get me wrong, certain brands have certain reputaciones for quality or lack thereof. My favorito brand is Tallia Orange! I’m partial to them porque they take risks. Whether it’s playing with patrones (patterns) or mixing up fabrics on lapel, their styling is always on point. They pay attention to detail.

Photo: Kristen Curette

Yo soy ( I am) athletically built so “off the rack” suiting can be a bit troublesome for me. Tallia Orange suit jackets and blazers have a great off the rack fit for the delgado (slim) yet athletically built señor. Otra (another) great feature of this brand is the lining of the suit jacket. Cada (each) chaqueta has printed silk lining. This subtle exquisite feature is an added bonus of refinement and elegance for this well made suit.

Tradicionalmente suits are business attire or formal wear and as such, have very formal styling rules. I’m challenging one of this rules in this post. NO SOCKS!

Although I’m wearing a traje (suit), I wanted to go for a more casual look. Donning a suit with no corbata (tie) and no calcetines (socks) accomplishes this. There are, however, un poco (a few) things to consider when sporting this look.

  1. Wear the right shoe. As a generalization, loafers, moccasins, and double monk strap shoes work best.
  2. Make sure that the ankles are in good shape! Your skin should be well moisturized.
  3. The cut of the leg should be slim, or at least tapered at the bail. The point of the look is to showcase the zapato! A wider bail will cover the shoe.
  4. The pant leg should not break over the shoe. It’s ok to “flood”or wear “high water” pants with mocassins or slippers. Again, the shoe is the focal point of the look.

Ahora, this looks isn’t for everyone but for those who are brave enough to try, use these simple guidelines.

When searching for loafers and mocassins, visit my good friends at Bachelor Shoes. They’ll definitely take care of you!

Stay fly my friends!

    A Gentleman and his Hat

Dapper, Fashion, Gentlemen, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Menswear, Style Tips

    Señores,

Sombreros are an importante part of a gentleman’s wardrobe. Hats signify class, style, flare, as well an aid in keeping a gent’s head warm and the sun out of his ojos. The effect of a perfectly placed hat is igual (equal), oftentimes, to the effect of zapatos.

Now there are many types of hats. RealMenRealStyle has provided a strong list of the more popular estilos of hats!

The tipo of hat that you wear depends on a few things.

    1. Your aesthetic and preference: If you’re a period style maven, you might stick with styles that were traditionally found in the era that you’re drawn to.
    2. The size and shape of your head and face:  Diferente hats look better on different people. Jaw lines, facial hair and hair style are all factors to consider when choosing a hat.
    3. The type of outfit: Tradicionalmente, certain hats go with with certain outfits. In more trendier looks, the lines are a bit more blurred and the reglas (rules) are more relaxed. However, you can never go wrong with the classic looks.

We can examinar these conventions at a later date. For the purposes of this post, yo quiero focus on  a few gentlemanly rules for hats. Again, these rules are of a traditional nature pero I believe, as a menswear enthusiast, that it is imperative that we compredemos, fully, the cultured way of wearing headgear.

    4. Gentlemen are to remove their hat in an elevator and hold it in their hand when a lady enters the lift.

    5. A gentleman should tip or remove his hat when approaching a lady.

      Photo | Fola Lawson

    6. A gentleman is to remove his hat before sitting at the dinner table. (It should already be removed when he walks in the restaurant.)

      Photo | Kristen Curette

Entoñces (so), as we sojourn through estilo, cultura, and vida, it’s important that we understand and respect the traditional values that have laid a foundation for us. As it relates to a gentleman and his hat, it’s no different.

Make sure that you visit the lads at Southern Gents to check out and purchase their hats and other dapper accessories!

    Keep it gentlemanly,

    Señores,

Excited does not begin to describe the nivel de exitación that I have have. Por que you ask; because fall is here! The meaning of otoño (Fall) is sort of esoteric in nature for me. It’s symbólico in nature.

Obviously fall is a change of seasons…quite literally, but it in turn can represent a change in life’s estaciones as well. Fall with all of it’s color changes, weather pattern shifts, and wardrobe varieties represents a shift in the earth and her inhabitants.

As a celebration of this shift, I want to present to you one of my favorite menswear accessory fall offerings, Harrison Blake Apperal.

Photo: Harrison Blake Apperal Instagram (@wearlapelpins)

On a monthly basis, you can get items such as the above September Box sent to you Puerto for a nominal fee. This service is an essential for me and should be for you as well.

As we celebrate fall and begin to redefine ourselves and wardrobe, often times all nececitamos is are minor changes. Slight modifications and additions can take our character, business, perspective, and wardrobe to another level. Harrison Blake Apperal (HBA) is a great way to stylishly accomplish this.

    Photo: Josh Aaron |@theurbanesavant

Arriba (above) you will notice that my ensemble is one of simplicity. Grey blazer with well fitting    khakis and a pair of wingtip derbys…simple right.

Well add a pop of color ofrecido por (provided by) HBA adds flare, life, and texture to standard neutrals.

    Photo: Josh Aaron |@theurbanesavant

The folks over at HBA took the time to supply us with one of my favorito style elements, pattern mixing. They mixed a polka dotted pocket square with a striped necktie

    Photo: Josh Aaron |@theurbanesavant

I took the pattern mixing to another level and added a counter striped poplin shirt and small checkered blazer to texturize the look even further.

    Photo: Josh Aaron |@theurbanesavant

Putting bold elementos such as a strong big face reloj (watch) and stacking my own wrist wear adds to the minor changes that HBA has mastered. Señores!

I enjoy a suit just like the next hombre! Suits have long been a símbolo garnering repeat, having power, and being distinguished. This is no secreto. I don’t know about you pero when I wear a suit I power up like Popeyes did when he ate his spinach!

Suits generally have a seriousness to them. Being distinguished usualmente has is akin to being stoic and stuff. I disagree totalmente. I encounter this aburrido (boring) sentiment at my 9-5. So I wanted to have a little fun in two of my favorite business suits.
