4 Steps to Easy Beard Care

Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion Blog, Gentlemanly Grooming, Gentlemen, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Style Tips

Senores,

Kings wear a crown.

It’s the defining “garment” of their royalty.

If  you’re a father, son, brother, nephew, or uncle….

THEN YOU ARE A KING!

But please don’t walk around wearing a crown.

That’s weird….VERY wierd.

Like, no one wants to see you looking like the Burger King guy walking around town!

But there is a way to show your nobility.

There’s a calling card of sorts that announces that the king has arrived!

THE FACE CROWN!

Kalan Beard

Beards have always been a part of a man’s style. Historically, your manhood was linked to you beard. From a prehistoric context, beards were worn for warmth, intimidation, and protection.

In ancient Egyptian culture, Egyptian royalty used false beards that were made of metal. It was held in place by a ribbon that was tied over their heads. This was one of many signifiers that a man was a member of the royal family.

Listen, that literally  sounds like some king-ish to me!!!!!

But we’re beyond that now and it’s a growing (pun intended) personal style element that modern gentlemen are embracing more and more. The conservative gent and workplace haven’t quite caught on fully, but the beard is on an upward trend in popular culture…regardless of ethnicity.

In my humble opinion, beards are here to stay. And as a black man there are specific steps that I must take to care for my face crown so that is announces  my kingship with distinction.

In fact, beard care has it’s roots (another pun intended) in Mesopotamia. These civilizations would use beard oil to keep their crowns healthy and robust looking. It’s important to maintain a great face crown. It can communicate a couple of things to those onlookers:Mesopotamia

  • Appearance is important to you
  • You are committed to style
  • Pay attention to grooming details
  • Cleanliness is a priority
  • You are a take charge kind of guy

NOW….

How do you maintain your beard? It’s actually very simple. These steps work regardless of your hair texture and/or curl patterns.

I. WASH YOUR BEARD

This is the simplest step in the process! Every day, whether you’re in the shower or at the sink, wash your beard when you wash you face. You can use a specific beard wash or a shampoo.

My preference is a beard wash. Using standard shampoo can strip your hair of essential oils that your beard needs. They an also dry out your face. Beard oils are complete with many natural products like shea, jojoba oil, keratin, coconut oil and others.

I have a specific regimen that I will detail later in the post.

II. CONDITION YOUR BEARD

Again, you can use your a standard conditioner or a specific beard conditioner. The purpose of conditioner is to replenish some of the oils that may have been washed off during the shampooing process. Conditioners don’t have harsha alcohols that will strip the hair.

Let’s discuss the process of conditioning

  1. Use a nickle’s size of product
  2. Work into your damp beard after you’ve washed it
  3. Use comb or pick to make sure that the product completely touches the shaft
  4. Let sit for 1-2  minutes. (Use this time to brush your teeth or wash your body if you’re in the shower)
  5. Rinse thoroughly

III. REPLENISH YOU BEARD

This process will vary with depending on what types of products work best with your texture. The important thing is to apply the beard oil or beard pomade to the hair when damp.

Gents, do not put the product in your palm and rub it in. This will not guarantee that it will be applied to every strand of hair.  Instead, place in on your finger tips and apply the oil or pomade by pulling using your fingers.

Start at the base of the hair strand and gently pull away from your face. Doing this will ensure that the replenishing process works as best as possible and that the pomade will be distributed evenly.

Another option for applications is spray. But you still want to employ the finger tip method to make sure the product has an even spread.

IV. STYLE YOUR BEARD

Simply put, brush your beard if it’s not long enough to comb or comb/pick your beard out if it’s full. Styling does more than make your beard look nice and neat. It also helps to distribute the oils from the replenishing process. Thirdly, styling helps to train your beard to grow into a certain direction.

A “part B” to the styling is edging your beard up. I recommend using a straight razor because you get the cleanest line possible. This takes time and practice so exercise patience. Consult your barber for the best techniques.

BONUS

Below is my washing schedule:

  • Monday – Wash using beard wash, condition using beard conditioner, apply replenishing products
  • Tuesday – Wash using beard wash and  apply replenishing products
  • Wednesday – Wash using beard wash, condition using (leave in conditioner – does not need to be rinsed, instead let it soak into hair), apply replenishing products
  • Thursday – Wash using beard wash and apply replenishing products
  • Friday – Wash using co-wash (washing substitute that cleanses and conditions)  and apply replenishing products
  • Saturday – Wash using beard wash, condition using beard conditioner, apply replenishing products
  • Sunday – Wash using clarifying shampoo (Clarifying shampoo will completely strip off all of the oils and build up that have been on your hair throughout the week), condition using beard conditioner, apply replenishing products.

I have dry skin and hair so it’s important that I condition my hair a couple of times a week. Additionally, I’m in a warm environment (Houston, TX) and I sweat a lot so clarifying shampoo is absolutely necessary to remove all the sweat and build up from my busy week.

My preferred products are:

Shea Moisture with Maracuja Oil and Shea Butter

Beard WashThis products is great because it deep cleans my beard of dirt, flakes and odors without drying out facial hair and skin. The Maracuja Oil and conditioning Shea Butter combine in this pH balanced formula that provides a clean slate for flawless grooming.

Remember to use a dime to nickle size of this product and work it into the hair with a good lather. You want to be sure to clean the hair thoroughly

Pantene Truly Natural Co-Wash

CowashThis product helps to fuel hair with a blend nutrients and antioxidants to guard against damage while cleaning, conditioning, and detangling. Its oil enriched so it moisturizes without stripping the natural oils.

Rub a half-palm size of the cowash into my hand and apply directly to my wet beard. It’s important to work it in to the hair using your fingertips. You can use a comb to comb out the hair while the product is in. This is optional. What is a must, however, is letting it sit in your beard for about a minute.

Cantu Leave In Conditioner

Great for hydrating and mending dry or coarse hair. It’s a leave in conditioner which means you don’t rinse it out. This is infused with pure shea butter and other natural oils.

Cantue Leave In

Cantu Pomade

My secret weapon!!!!!! It’s not something that’s typical for beards but it works great for me. Even though it’s a pomade, the product is not heavy.Cantue Pomade It provides a dope shine that lasts all day and smells great. Hey, my wife approves!!!!

Stay fly mis amigos!

The Perfect Summer Jacket – Canali Kei Blazers

Blazers, Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion, Fashion Blog, Gentlemen, Men's Fashion, Men's Jackets, Men's Shoes, Men's Style, Men's suits, Mens Style, Menswear, Shoes, sneakers, street style, Style Tips, Suits, well dressed

Señores!

It’s hot!

Like, so hot that the devil had to take a day off!

Nonetheless, me espero (I hope) that you are enjoying your summer!

Travel, fun, & sun is what it’s all about.

But if you live in a climate like mine, verano (summer) can wreak havoc on your wardrobe.

Sweaty back, armpit stains, and  a wet chest will ruin an outfit. The ladies don’t like it and it can really hurt a gent’s confidence.

So how do you stay cool, yet remain stylish, during the warm summer days/nights…especially when wearing a blazer? After all, it is a staple in a man’s wardrobe.

1.  It’s All About the Quality

When shopping for a dope blazer/jacket, you want to focus on the quality of the brand. FullSizeRender (7)Quality is not always synonymous with price but the amount that you paga (pay) can be an indicator. Since 1934, Canali has been creating timeless and superbly crafted menswear pieces that are worth every penny. Canali has pieces that fit into any aesthetic and wardrobe.

When making a determination of quality, you want to look at details such as thread count, button types (horn not plastic), stitching, and weight of the fabric. Your jacket should not be shinny, frilling, or pill.

2. It’s All About the Fabric

You’ve heard me say it time and time again that fabric is what makes or breaks an item of clothing. The construction, design, and fit are secondary to the type of textile that being used. The most breathable fabrics are

  • Linen – coolest of all clothing fabrics. Lightweight and doesn’t hold moisture. Wrinkles easily and keeps the wrinkles.
  • Cotton – breathable & holds moisture; most durable and versatile textile.
  • Linen/cotton blend
  • Chambray – durable, durable, durable! Can be hot but the gauge of the fabric can determine how much heat is retained
  • Synthetic dry fit textiles – moisture wicking. This means that the fabric will pull the sweat away from the body and keeps the muggy feeling at bay. Most jerseys and athletic wear are made from this material

3. Construction is Key

For purposes of this article, construccion simply defined. It’s how the jacket is made. In blazers the construction comes in three different forms.

When a jacket is made, it has an interlining that’s known as a canvas. This interlining is usualmente made from horsehair or a horehair combined with cotton or a sythetic material. It’s found between the outer layer of the jacket and the lining. Canali Craftsmanship

It’s purpose is to help the chaqueta  to drape smoothly over the chest. The canvass gives additional support which will allow the garment to be worn properly and fall over the chest and shoulders with ease and style.

The two warm weather constructions are:

Unconstructed

These jackets are unlined and do not have the canvas in them except in the sleeve. Additionally, unconstructed jackets don’t have any roping and have common features such asUnconctructed DB

  • exposed seams
  • working cuffs
  • patch pockets

The major fabric is the outer layer. You will find these in linen, 100% cotton, and cotton blend jackets. The lack of lining allows the jacket to vent well and remains breathable.

I am especially fond of the Kei Jacket. It’s an  icon of Canali blazers and features a soft silhouette for a relaxed and refined look. It’s lightweight construction and varied colorways offer a great selection that every gent should have in their closet.

FullSizeRender (3)When sporting this type of jacket, they are best worn with casual outfits. Pair them with some jeans and chinos. If you’re really feeling frisky, you can add some simple silhouette sneakers that will give the entire look an edge.

Half Canvas
The canvas in the lining is found throughout the top half of the jacket. This allows for a Half Canvas well-shaped shoulder structure – a very important part of a well-fitting jacket, and ensures the jacket tapers towards the waist. It’s important to remember that a half canvas jacket does have some layering but there are plenty of areas where ventilation can happen. Half Canvas jackets do not lay as flat and  do not move as much as a full canvas construction but are the most popular because they still look sturdy and are very comfortable. They are also, generalmente speaking, less expensive than full canvas pieces.

Generally, you would pair a half canvas jacket with trousers or chinos. They can, however, look great with well fitting pair of jeans.

Keep these facts in mind when searching for the perfect summer blazer or summer suit.

**Editor’s Picks

If you’re reading this blog, then you know that when it comes to style,  I am a fan of the non-traditional and lover of printed fabrics. I really don’t believe in looking like the next gent. There is an intelligent way to break the style rules or have a differentiated look that everyone else.  Canali has a Seersucker Line Seer - Jacketthat does it for me! The lightweight, fresh, and breathable details of the line are remarkable thanks to its characteristic puckering. Seersucker is the perfect fabric for blazers and casual pants for warm weather seasons.Seer - Trousers The microcheck print is different in that the blue is closer to a navy than a cobalt – which is what you would find in a traditional seersucker pattern. Additionally, the line has complete navy options and a collarless water resistant jacket for those pesky evening yacht parties in Miami harbor. The line allows you to mix and match different components seamlessly.

I also fell in love with their footwear. More especificamente, Canali’s sneakers are timeless. The simple design and rich colors allow them to be worn with casual or sporty looks. For the perfect summer chic look, the style savvy gent would team the sneakers with the Seersucker Line, a white shirt (oxford or tee), a bold pocket square, and a well made straw fedora for flare! You would be the talk of the harbor!!

Remember, stay fly my friends!!!!!! It’s easy to do so in Canali!

A Lesson from the Style Professor…

Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion, Fashion Blog, Gentlemen, Happy Hour, Inspiration, Lifestyle, Men's Fashion, Men's Shoes, Men's Style, Mens Style, Menswear, street style, Streetwear, Style Tips

Senores,

By day I am a maestro de la ciencias politicas (political science professor).

Shocking, I know. I’m more than just some fly dude, lol.

And I think that kind of reality fits us all. We are more that what meets the eye. Being pegged in una caja (a box)  is an injustice as it doesn’t fully allow us to showcase how uber talented we truly are.

As such, I’d like to challenge you to show off your real identity. You know, that person you were meant to be. Gente (people) deserve to know the essence of you.

We are all put on this mundo for a reason and to achieve a specific purpose. If we aren’t being who we were meant to be, then the world won’t get to experience the measure of greatness that was given to you.

Step 1: Be Okay with YOU!

Idris Elba asked a group of adults what they wanted to be when they grew up and the responses were amazing. Actually, some made me tear up. Many had forgotten their dreams. Life took over and, like all of us, they adjusted. Now, adjusting is great. The vida that we live can throw curve balls to us and we need to be pliable…BUT NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR DREAMS.

So, gaze into the world with intention and join me in showing the world who you really are!!!!!!

grey-headshot

Me?

I’m a dope college professor, with a dope political radio show,  who is a dope style maven that has a dope style blog (which I use for inspiration) and I try to change the world one dope; stylish, and learned person at a time! Oh, and a dope clothing line is soon to come!!!

To be more succinct, I’m Kalan Laws, The Style Professor. It’s nice to meet you!

Y usted es? (And you are…)

Now that we’ve met, let’s go to the next step.

Step 2: Cover and Show

Show the world your talentos. Give them….us a piece of your gift. UNAPOLOGETICALLY! For too long you’ve hidden behind the veil, stayed in a cave – cloaking your greatness in the shadows.

But when you show who you really are,  do so strategically. The masses may associate your face (metaphor for you) with one thing, so let your talent go before you. Produce your art, create your product, cement your brand…then reemerge as the new and autentico you!

Cubre (cover) your face (what folks know as the old you) and show your product (the new you). Caballeros (gentlemen) if you decide to literally cover your face, make sure you use some dope headgear.

img_3752

Jacket:Forver 21

Walk away from where and how you used to move and let the new you lead. Keep working toward building the foundation, walls, and roof of the you that people need to see.

Step 3: Take a Step Back

After some time, lay back and gauge the reaction to see if you are getting any bites. Sit still and watch as personas begin to marvel at such dopeness. The idea here is to let what you’re construiendo (building) work for you. Movement is great…necessary but there are times when sitting still is best.

img_3755

Boots:  Bar III (@bar3)

Step 4: Focus on the Details

As you, in all of your new dopeness, continue to enlighten all as to the real you – take a minute to focus on what makes this you different than the other you. Focus on the detallas that make the redefined you so special.

I guarantee that there is something you have or that you are doing that may be seemingly insignificant…maybe even considered a flaw or undesirable, pero is extremely poderoso (powerful). This characteristic is what your new audience NEEDS to experience. OWN IT. SHOW IT. BE IT! Give them a close up look so they can know that you are for real!

Step 5: Move with Confidence

Now that you’ve announced who you really are, walk proudly in your new truth! Pop your collar porque you have done what so many cannot or are afraid to do. Research is clear that confidence matters just as much as ability. People are drawn to the person whose moxie is fuerte (strong).

img_3756

Photos: @flawson_

And keep going. Keep pushing. Keep heading toward your finish line!! Once you’re done, stand on your proverbial podium…proud of what you’ve done and who you have become.

For now the world has seen the true you, and in pursuing your truth, you’ve realized purpose. Those who have experienced the transformation and/or finished product will have been impacted, inspired, and ignited.

Style Matters…to EVERYONE

Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion, Gentlemen, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Mens Style, Menswear, Style Tips, well dressed

Señores,

Yo tengo a question.

Why does style matter?

They’re  just clothes…

Who really cares?

The answer: EVERYONE!

Even those who think they don’t care about style are deeply affected by it.

Let me show you how…

  • Work uniforms
  • School dress code
  • Sports uniforms

These are just tres ways that fashion and style have touched us all.

It matters to companies…they want you to representar them well.

It matters to schools…they want you to dress in such a way that it encourages learning.
It matters to teams…they want all to know who you play for.

IT MATTERS!

So, yo quiero deviate from the the typical post with this one?

Recently, I had the privilege to speak to a group of young men (middle – high school age boys) about looking your best. It was titled The Passport to Style: Your Ticket to Confidence.

I was able to conectar with these young men so that they would understand the benefits of looking great. It was my goal to give them reasons beyond what they’ve probably heard a kazillion times already.

I called out some of the young guys to ask the to give me their business card or identificación

Most of them looked at me like I was crazy. They didn’t have cars so they didn’t have a license. The young gents weren’t business owners so they didn’t have business cards.

My next question was, “How am I going to know who you are?”

Crickets was the response.

I told them that they’d already presented me their ID based on their appearance. Naturally the dialogue progressed into the importance of looking well put together because people are making assumptions and judgements about you based on what they see.

After our chat, it was time for a demonstración. It’s shocking to know how many young guys don’t know how to tie a necktie. This was the day that the lads who didn’t know would learn!

The necktie is like the keystone for a man’s wardrobe. It communicates strength, professionalism, and refinement for its wearer.

So one by one we start to show the guys how it’s done. We focused on the single Windsor knot. It’s classicism can’t be overstated. Especíal attention was paid to the dimple. After all, the dimple is the cherry on top!

The beauty of this event was the support by other men. Rallying behind the boys to be an example was a high point during the session. Many of the young lads don’t have this kind of positive one-on-one interaction with an adult male, so it’s needed.

The end result was a $50 gift card for the best knot.

Pero this chico wasn’t the only winner if the day. All the guys walked out of the session with a new tie and dress shirt!

It is my sincere desire that the young men left with a new perspective and appreciation for how they present themselves.

HOW TO WEAR A DENIM JACKET

Denim, Fashion, Fashion Blog, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Mens Style, Menswear, street style, Streetwear, Style Tips

Denim has long been the perfect menswear item.

The denim jacket has been forgotten…or at least misplaced.

So how do you wear it? Well, I can tell you that it’s more than just putting it on one arm at a time.

See my suggestions below:

1. DAPPER DENIM

Pair a spread or cutaway collared camisa with a strong tie and you have an outfit that dapper Dan would be proud of. The beauty of this look is that if you pull the tie off and roll up the sleeves, it becomes a totalmente different aesthetic.

I wouldn’t suggest this look for the tradicionál professional evironment, but it’s dope for dinner and drinks or if you work at a cosmopolitan type of job.

2. DOUBLE DENIM

This used to be known as the Canadian Tuxedo and was a a major faux pas! It was believed that only the rugged mountainous types would be seen in this look as it was not deemed refined.

What a crock!!!

Double denim is best when it is broken up.Wearing denim jackets are a great way to achieve this because the shirt underneath the jacket cleans the look up.

Another way that double denim works is to sport two diferente washes/colors.

Doesn’t matter if the top is dark and bottom is light or vice versa, it siempre works.

3. DENIM AND KHAKI

Let’s just be honest, khakis go with pretty much everything. But put them with a denim jacket and you get a simple casual masterpiece. This is perfect for stylishly running around during the weekend.

My preference is to role up the sleeves. It allows my watch and other wristwear to be seen. With simple outfits such as this, the detalles are super important.

4. DENIM AND JOGGERS

The versatility of the denim jacket is really underappreciated. Creating a juxtaposition of sporty and casually rugged can be done. Notice the elongated scoop neck, split hem t-shirt that adds a bit of layering.

5. DENIM VEST

It’s not super popular, but is very fun. I can’t imagine this item being anything but casual at its dressiest (is that a word, lol).

Denim vests allow you to stack textiles on top of textiles. Keep it simple with a plain t-shirt under it because the vest is the highlight of the look.

Pair with joggers, denim, or khakis and you will get a playful, yet urban look that is sure to turn heads. Denim vests are not for the conservative gent, as they are usually acid washed or have some sort of design on them.

I don’t want to discourage you, just prepare you!

5 Cool Ways To Wear Stars And Stripes

Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion, Fashion Blog, Gentlemen, GQ, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Mens Style, Menswear, Shoes, sneakers, street style, Streetwear, Style Tips, Urban Outfitters

¡Señores!

Barbecue, swimming pools, and fire works!

These are the necesitos of Dia de la Independicia!

Everyone is having a cookout and the skies will be filled with “bombs bursting in air.”

Guys will be wearing plastic hats with streamers, big sunglasses with the American Flag on the lenses, and all sorts of party favors.

Pero as a man of style, how can you stand out from everyone else? What can you do to remain fashionable as well as fly the flag?

It’s obvio (obvious) that you should wear the Stars and Stripes, but how?

1. INCORPORATE STARS AND STRIPES IN ONE PIECE

Shirt: Brooklyn Cloth | Photo: @matthewc0le

It’s important that the rest of the outfit is simple. Stars and Stripes can really compete and look too busy if you have it all over the outfit. Usualmente when the pattern is in one item, it’s done perfectly. It’s the highlight of the outfit, so less is more

Sneakers: Mosson Bricke | Photo: @mattherc0le

Light accessories with a colored shoe will work if you want to round out the look. Admittedly it’s risky as it can border on being too occupado (busy), buts it’s worth a try.

2. ACCESSORIZE WITH CLASSIC PIECES

Tie and Square: Sprezza Box | Photo: trav_white_

You want to have classico pieces because they can be worn all year. Red, white, and blue are colors that work in every season.  Additionally, it’s important that patterns are not overpowering. You can guarantee that this won’t happen by wearing solids that break the patterns up.

Tie and Square: Sprezza Box | Photo: @trav_white_

Also, the the Stars and Stripes should not be on the same accessory. They need to be separate or broken up. In the above pic, the patterns are broken up by the white shirt and the blazer. Again, this is so they eye doesn’t get confused with competing patterns.

3. WEAR STARS & STRIPES ON FOOTWEAR

Sneakers: Converse | Photo @euanholden

Wearing the pattern on your feet should be done with a simple outfit. You can tie in the colors in the shoe with headgear or other accessories for continuity. It critical that you remember that the Stars and Stripes are the focus of the outfit. Footwear is beyond importante so you don’t need to overdo it.

4. DRESS IN STARS AND STRIPES OF DIFFERENT COLORS

Tank: Rustic Soles

Cambie (change) the game with different colors of Stars and Stripes. Because it’s such a recognizable pattern that conjures so much emotion, the change of pace with different colors will really stand out. It’s best to have both Stars and Stripes on the same article of clothing when the colors aren’t red, white, and azúl.

5.  STARS WITH A COLORED SHOE

Shoes: Mosson Bricke | Shirt: Ecko

Stripes are common place in menswear; everyone has them. So having them be the highlight of an outfit is, well…regular! What’s the punto of being ordinary? For a different look, let the stars shine in your outfit. And you know I’m partial to a colored zapato! It just works!!!

Independence Day is a celebration of freedom. Express your sense of libertád in the most stylish way possible.

Stay fly mis amigos!

Señores!
Today is la dia that we celebrate PADRES!!!

Dads get corbatas (neckties) or a camiseta (tshirt) that says “Best Dad”

Dads are taken out for dinner or to their favorite sporting event.

It’s daddy’s day so whatever he wants, he gets!

Well, what yo quiero is to share with you is three things that fatherhood has taught me about style!

1. I REPRESENT MORE THAN MYSELF

I’m elder of my family. I’m the figurehead that the world looks to to protect and provide for them. While more than important, provision goes beyond money and tangible things that have an associated value.

To my daughter (and future children), I provide an ejemplo of what a man should look like. When she gets ready to go on her 1st date (at 30 years old, lol), she’s going to choose someone that reflects me.

As well dressed man, we are though to have:

  • Power
  • Intelligence
  • Success
  • Cultured

These, among others, are qualities that I would want my daughter to look for in a man. Also, a well dressed man consistently:

  • Exhibits attention to detail
  • Exudes confidence
  • Exemplifies leadership

These are also the qualities that I want my niños and esposa to see in me.

My wife Kira and daughter Eden

As a fashionable black man, I am a walking billboard for black culture as well. The creativity that it takes to piece together such a dapper demonstration of dignity is admirable. It speaks to the innovation that resides in me ( and all other fashionable black fathers and men) in its totality.

Brandon and Olivia

Speaking of reflection, it will be seen in the mirror of the world. As such, the segundo thing style has taught me about fatherhood is…

2. I’M IN AN ELITE CLASS

I’m a dad and that means I’m in an exclusive fraternity!

I’m an African American dad and that means I’m a superhero!

Tshirt – @TheUrbanDads

In a tiempo when black dads are not as present in the family as in yester-year, I take huge pride in this responsibilidad and privilege.

  • My personal style helps to change the narrative in how the black male and the black father are perceived in media!
  • A well groomed and astonishingly put together black man all but eradicates the notion that all black men are ghetto thugs and hoodlums (which is how mainstream media and Hollywood often portray us).

All about business!

3. I AM FEARLESS

Tradición and cultura has boxed in style for men for years and it can be suffocating. It has been said that only certain colors are masculine. The old consensus was that being well manicured and paying atención to your appearance wasn’t manly. I scoff at that sentiment!

I jump at the chance to look nice!

Men of style and culture know that it can be a daunting task trying to live up to such standards that are, honestamente, not grounded in reality. Being a man of style has started to change the conversation about the perseption of masculinity.

Gents, be confident in this:

  • Dressing well doesn’t mean you’re soft and weak.
  • Smelling nice doesn’t mean that you’re not a man.
  • Polishing your shoes has no bearing on toughness.
  • Getting manicures and pedicures doesn’t make you any less of a man’s man.

Strength in style…

Style conscious gents have endured ridicule and castigation for daring to strive for excelencia in our appearance. We’ve been fearless in this pursuit regardless of the level of criticizing!

Hermanos, I applaud you for being courageous in this endeavor. You deserve a standing ovation for enduring the name calling, being cast away, and having your manhood challenged.

Call upon that gallantry in life when times get hard. Know that you can and will conquer difícil circumstances when they present themselves!

Bro, you’re a man…100%!

5 Ways to Safely Wear Color

Dapper, Dapper Man, Fashion, GQ, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Mens Style

Señores!!! NYC is in the 70’…Houston is in the 80’s

Oh and it’s only March!

It’s springtime baby!

With primavera (Spring) comes fun patterns, bold colores, and breathable fabrics. It’s actualmente a fun time for fashion and style.

There is un problema. Many men don’t know how to implement these into their wardrobe. Some guys feel as if certain colors are not masculine enough. Otro hombres may think that patterns are too busy and compete. Well let me tell you that those sentiments couldn’t be further from the truth.

As with all elements of style, it’s about your comfort level but do know that color and patterns are necessary elements for today’s stylish gent. To figure out how properly mix patterns, check out my pattern mixing post here

Ahora let’s get down to business. How do you add color to your outfit without going over the top?  Aqui are 4 ways to safely wear color.

1. Pick a palate and stay there.

This is the safest way to add color and dimension to your outfit. For example,if you’re wearing blue jeans and a blue blazer, make sure your socks are a different shade of blue. The blues (or any color) should compliment and not clash.

Another option is to monochrome the main pieces of your outfit and add a diferente shade of the same color palate.

Notice the cobalt blue suit that is accented by a deep blue slip on. This tactic helps to provide depth to the ensemble while not being over the top.

 2. Add a pop of color with your shoes.

When doing this, let the color be the focal point of the
shoe and the remainder of the outfit should be simple. This will draw the eyes toward the show and make its color more impactful.

One subtle nuance to really show continuity in the color of the show is to have that color slightly scattered throughout one additional piece of clothing that you’re wearing.

3. Use your accessories as your color options.

Something as subtle as a bright tie clip can provide enough irreverence in your ensemble to be modern but remain classic.

Or you could create a collage of color using pocket squares and wrist wear on a solid canvass. This helps add texture and levels to the coloring.

4. Balance bold bright colors with deep rich colors.

This technique is useful in breaking up the boldness. Too many bright colors or too much of one bright colo can be overbearing and, quite frankly, will make you look like  a clown.

5. Make blue your primary color.

This is not a rule per se, but it is a preference that many stylish gents tend to lean toward…whether they realize it or not.

Using blue as the backdrop for your outfit acts like primer for paint. It allows colors to pop and be vibrant. Imagine how the colors of flowers pop against the sky!!

3 Tips to Mixing Textures and Patterns

Fashion Blog, Gentlemen, Lifestyle, Men's Fashion, Men's Style, Mens Style, Menswear, street style, Streetwear, Style Tips

Señores,

“That’s too busy for me” or “He looks old he’s hot in all that”

We’ve all said these statements. As hombres we want to portray a sense of style and sophistication sin (without) trying too hard or doing too much.

Mirando (looking) at gents who are wearing competing patterns and textures is off putting and just downright wrong. So how is it done properly?
First let’s get a few definiciones out of the way.

Texture: the refers to how the fabric feels. Many times textures garments have patterns on them but this is not siempre the case. Think corduroy vs. denim. The ribs of the corduroy create a pattern too with a rough texture. While denim has a texture, many different textures depending on the composition; but doesn’t always have a patrón.

Pattern: A pattern is simply printed design that can be abstract or reoccurring like paisley, flores, or gingham. Patterns don’t have a feel to them. Thatnis to say they’re not raised, rough, hanging, etc.

Ahora, how do you mix these? Here are three ways to  make sure that you mix your textures subtlety but successfull.

1. Maintain scale differences. When mixing textures and patterns you can’t have the patterns or textures the same size. They will compete and the result is looking  too busy.

@samodinero

Notice that in each one of the ejemplos, none of the patterns are the same size (scale). This allows the patterns to flow seamlessly and crest a balance in the look.

2. Make sure the patterns and textures are broken up with solids. This will quiet the nose of the look and make it fluid.

The patterns are touching but are surrounded by solid colors that make the pattern pop but not too noisily.

@trav_white_

When mixing textures like linen, cotton, and denim, la misma reglas (the same rule) applies. Keep one piece as the solid that will break up the patterns and smooths out the textures.
3. Play with light and dark color mixes. When mixing textures and palates don’t have dark on dark or light on light.

Mixing bright with dulls or dark with lights (as seen below) allows the ensemble to be balanced.

@handkersquares

All in all, take the time to look and see if your textures and patters are balanced. We are getting closer to primavera (spring time) and the florals are about to about. Let’s make sure it’s correctamente.
